15-Year-Old Girl Was Kidnapped by a Human Trafficker but a State Trooper Intervened During a Traffic Stop

She was absolutely terrified.

A teenage girl has much to be thankful for after being rescued from a sex trafficker by a state trooper. The Ohio State Trooper decided to do a routine traffic stop and he had no idea what he was about to encounter. Officer Mitch Ross was working his regular shift when he pulled over a vehicle in Lucas County, Ohio. He noticed that the driver failed to yield at a flashing light and he decided to pull the man over, just a routine stop that most officers would address. However, when Officer Ross approached the car, he saw the driver and another person inside the vehicle, along with the young girl.

The driver was Juan Carlos Morales-Pedraza and neither he nor his passenger spoke English. Because of this, the officer was forced to call in a translator, but he said he felt suspicious from the very beginning. The dash camera video captured the conversation between the translator and the officer, who said, "I'd hate to release her to a dude that's 35 and her not be 18." Eventually, the translator and the officer spoke to the young woman alone and that's when she told them that she was only 15 years old and had been sexually assaulted after the man abducted her.

As it turns out, the teenager was from New Jersey and Morales-Pedraza had taken her from her family's home. For some reason, she had the idea that he was taking her to a Chicago sex trafficking ring. All it took was that one traffic stop to seal the fate of Morales-Pedraza, fortunately. Now, he's in prison on trafficking and rape charges. The young woman received immediate medical care and is not secure and safe back at home where she belongs.

Sex trafficking is a tremendous problem not just in the U.S. but around the world and is worse in states that have major highways. The National Human Trafficking Hotline reports that there were nearly 9,000 reports of human trafficking in 2017 alone. Experts suggest that the number is likely higher because so many instances of trafficking go unreported. As a woman and the parent of a daughter, this is absolutely terrifying.
