Oh, and the woman had a MAGA mask, which she refused to keep on.
A Starbucks barista has received a lot of positive recognition for keeping her cool during an attack by a Trump-supporting anti-masker who went racist on her. The California barista, Alex Beckom, was serving a customer who went on a wild rant when the young barista asked her to wear her mask, which the woman had pulled off to ask a question. The 19-year-old asked the woman to put her mask back on, enforcing the nationwide policy that Starbucks implemented, that all customers had to wear masks when in their buildings. The woman flew off the handle and started verbally attacking the teenager.
Because her mask said "Make America Great Again," the woman seemed to think that Alex was discriminating against her for being a supporter of Pres. Donald Trump, which doesn't make a lot of sense since Alex was actually asking her to wear the MAGA mask. In a tone that's apologetic, Beckom told the woman, who still had her mask around her chin, “the next time you come in, I need you to put your mask on," and this seemed to further enrage the customer, who proceeded to rant at Alex more and say, "It's not a law - It's not the law!" The woman even added, "And I can show you the penal code and everything. It’s a hoax!”
The woman became even more inflamed, saying, “I don’t have to wear a mask — I’m not going to wear a mask! This is America and I don’t have to do what you say!” She then yelled a very loud, "F**k you!" and turned to leave, but she wasn't quite done. She wanted to do further damage and hurl more abuse at a teenaged employee. The woman wasn't done with her rant and decided to throw another gem into it by turning back and yelling, "F**k Black Lives Matter!!!" at the Black teenager.
Alex's manager saw the video, which another customer was recording and later posted to social media. The manager said in an update that her manager was “happy that I managed the situation with poise and maturity." Someone asked why she didn't just "punch the lady," and Alex responded with this: “Why didn’t I just punch the lady? Because I like my job, and I want to keep my job,” Beckom said with a smile. Starbucks told NBC San Diego that the woman is no longer welcome in any Starbucks store, and added this statement: “Our focus right now is providing support to our partner who demonstrated tremendous composure during a very difficult interaction,” the coffee giant said.
