A very brave but lucky 5-year-old is seen on home security footage trying to attack home invaders armed with guns.
In Indiana, during a horrifying home invasion, a 5-year-old is seen on video fighting a group of armed robbers with all his might, even smacking one of the men with a toy. According to police, the footage, captured on September 30, shows a home invasion taking place in South Bend as four suspects wearing hoodies barge into a home after kicking in a door. At least three of the men involved in the robbery can be seen wielding firearms, but that didn't discourage Tamika Reid's son from doing everything in his power to protect his mother, she later told WSBT.
The boy is seen throwing a toy at what of the men before swatting at the suspect's arm, the same one holding the gun.
“I tried throwing my car at him,” the brave kid recalled.
Reid recalled that she was ironing and busy trying to get everyone going for the day when the men stormed in.
“You would hear me saying, ‘What is that?!’ ” she told the station.
Reid said that shots had been fired, and within moments the suspects were in the family's kitchen. According to Reid, that did not scare David Johnson, who immediately jumped up to defend his mom and sister.
“My whole thing was — my hero right here — he was steady trying to hit the guys,” Reid recalled. “My thing was, I need to get him out of the house before they do something to my son.”
Thankfully, there were no injuries reported, and the suspect did not steal anything from the family's home, police said. However, at this time, the assailants are still at large.
Police official meanwhile praised the young hero who was stood his ground to protect his family.
“A lot of people are saying this little boy is so brave and he deserves a gold star, and that’s true; he was extremely brave in this situation,” South Bend police spokeswoman Christine Karsten told the station. “But no little boy, nobody, in general, should have to go through something like this, so it’s really important we get those who are responsible for this heinous crime off the streets.”
One of Reid's neighbors said she was heartbroken after seeing the footage.
“We were shocked, we heard the gunshots, it was scary,” neighbor Olivia Cruz told WNDU. “I mean, our kids play outside, but that’s the first incident like that since I’ve been here. Oh my God, it broke my heart; he was trying so hard to protect his mom and get them out of there.”
As the suspects fled the home, they fired more gunshots, according to police. If anyone has any information about this case, please contact South Bend Police (574) 235-9263.
“This video is extremely disturbing,” police said while posting the footage Friday. “You can see a little boy hitting one of the armed suspects as he tried to defend his home. It is our job now to defend him.”
We are just relieved that no one got hurt, but hopefully, police catch these individuals before they end up harming someone. You can watch the alarming video below.
